Schools
play a huge role in enticing people to communities. The Mt. Vernon
R-V School System sets itself apart by providing quality education
for its 1,563-plus students and empowering each to be outstanding
citizens upon graduation.
Our
Mt. Vernon fully accredited school system was presented in 2005
with its fifth-straight coveted "Distinction and Performance"
award, only one of 34-plus schools in the state of Missouri region
to receive such a distinction for five straight years.
The
Class AAA system includes three schools buildings which are pictured

The
Mt. Vernon High School was constructed in 1997 and recent classroom
additions were made to the elementary school; plans are presently
being made for additional classrooms.
The
school system has made a strong commitment with its support of the
popular A-plus Program, where students who qualify and meet specific
requirements receive college tuition for several Missouri-based
institutions of higher education.
The
school also has strong extra-curricular activities, including a
state-champion women's golf program, playoff contending football,
basketball, tennis and volleyball teams, as well as award-winning
bands, vocal music, FFA and speech and debate teams.
The
district also provides vocational training through the Southwest
Area Career Center. The 898-acre University of Missouri Southwest
Research Center is devoted to helping the area's agricultural economy.
Mt. Vernon also offers two skydiving schools. The school district
is also sandwiched between Southwest
Missouri State University to the east in Springfield and Missouri
Southern State University to the west in Joplin.
The
first school in the area was actually built before the town was
established, and was said to be in a log cabin on Williams Creek,
north of town.
This
growing and much-respected school district serves as a bright beacon
to the continued growth of the entire Mt. Vernon community.
